What to expect on your first shift at a distribution at The Food Depot

When you arrive at The Food Depot, a group of volunteers will be gathering near the back of the Feeding Santa Fe building (right in front of The Food Depot’s warehouse). A staff member (likely Jill, Tim, or Billie) will provide a welcome/safety talk in which all volunteers will be screened. From there, the team will divide and conquer. Most volunteers will help with either preparing food boxes for distribution, putting food in people’s trucks, directing traffic, counting cars, opening trunks, washing numbers off car windshields, etc. You will be working alongside staff and very experienced volunteers who can provide specific details on your role.

The Food Depot will provide water and snacks, but please feel free to bring your own. We will also have gloves and extra masks, as well as KN95 masks and face shields for certain positions that have the most interaction with the public. Dress according to the weather, as the distributions are entirely outside. Social distancing is challenging, if not impossible, at distributions. If that is a concern for you, you may want to consider a different volunteer opportunity, such as repackaging food at the warehouse.
